A Brief History of Port de Grave Pentecostal Church

The first Pentecostal meetings at Port de Grave were held in the Orange Hall in the early Spring of 1925 with Pastor R. W. English from St. John's as the speaker. Assisting him on the first night were Mr. & Mrs. Stanley, also from St. John's, and Mr. Josiah Marshall.

During the night following, other helpers arrived, including Miss Sophie Guy. A number of people were saved at that time and some were filled with the Holy Spirit. In the prayer meetings that followed in various homes, many others were saved as well.

The first Pentecostal Sunday School in Port de Grave started in the summer months of 1925. Miss Flora Bowering, who served as Pastor, would walk to Hibb's Cove from where she stayed in Ship Cove. There she would hold Sunday School, first in a store that was used for storing hay, and later in another store where some horse tackling and twine were kept. Miss Bowering would then walk back to Port de Grave and hold two more services in the Orange Hall, one at 3:00 in the afternoon and another at 7:00 in the evening.

In the Fall of 1925, the Orange Hall was no longer available and Mr. George Andrews donated a piece of land on which to build a church. It started in 1925 and opened on Good Friday, April 2, 1926. While the church was being built, services were held in homes and several people were saved in those meetings. On Easter Sunday night, April 4, and in the weeks that followed, many others gave their hearts to the Lord.

The first Pastor to take up residence after the church was opened was Miss Elsie Pike of St. John's. The next was Newman Lashana and following him, Miss Winnie Taylor. All pastored in the same year, except Miss Taylor who filled in for a short time and left again in January of 1927.

The next Pastor was Miss Sophie Guy who arried in January 1927 and stayed until October of the same year. Almost every night during the Winter and Spring, prayer meetings were held. When there was no church service, prayer meetings would be held in various homes. At that time a number were filled with the Holy Spirit.

In the summer of 1926 the first water baptismal service was held at Hibb's Cove in the salt water and in May of 1927 a second water baptismal service was held on the same beach. It was a cold, misty day with the wind from the north, but that didn't hinder many from being baptized. Pastor R. W. English, who was the General Superintendent, did the baptizing on both occasions. For many years after, baptismal services were held in the Pond. Souls were saved every year and a baptismal service was an annual event.

A prayer convention was held in 1929 with Miss Garrigus in attendance. Many were saved, including Mrs. Hazel (Porter) Roberts. She, like many others from the Port de Grave Assembly, felt the call of God on her life and became a preacher of the gospel.

In those early years it was difficult to get land suitable for a cemetery. There was very much opposition concerning a piece of land the people of the church were interested in. After some time a place was found. However, it was more than six years before anyone died from the Pentecostal Church.

The late Pastor F. G. and Mrs. Bursey held special meetings in the winter of 1933. Some of the older members now in our Assembly were saved at that time. In the years that followed, there were many special times when souls were saved and believers filled with the Holy Spirit until the first Church was too small and a new building was started in the Fall of 1962. It was officially opened and dedicated to the glory of God on Sunday, May 26, 1963.

Most of the members of the first church and many of the second have passed on to their eternal reward, but God's work goes on. It is with grateful hearts that we thank God for His faithfulness and blessing upon our Assembly over the past eighty years. The third new church was officially opened and dedicated to the Lord on April 19, 1987.
